What is it that prohibits most from open, honest, valuable communication?

Fear.

The irony is, once most actually vocalise their ideas, they realise fear serves little to their interest and only prohibits the achievement of their idea. I guess the thinking is “if i don’t tell people about my idea, they can’t steal it, or can’t criticise it”. The revelation for many is that it’s only by actively sharing idea’s do we become connected to those that can help. I believe we evolve faster to our desired outcome via open, frank communication.
